formTL

was founded in 2004 by IPL team members. formTL took over the ongoing projects, the project rights and IPL Ingenieurplanung GmbH archives. Since then the company has grown steadily from a staff of 10 to 20 employees. 2009 formTL was certified according to the quality standard „Planer am Bau“ in 2009 and moved into its new offices in the former Schiesser boiler house in Radolfzell in 2012.

structural engineers and architects with an integrated approach to form, function, sustainability and planning quality. We offer a consultancy service, design, optimise, calculate and deliver feasibility studies and tenders for your investment insurance.

Others may stop but formTL keeps going: we are still at your side to offer support after the approval planning and detailed design phase. Our expert site management controls costs and ensures quality and timelines. We draw up assembly plans, workshop drawings and provide cutting patterns ready for the cutter with all the necessary data for purchasing, production and assembly.

SUPPORTING AND LIGHTWEIGHT STRUCTURES

Pre-tensioned membranes, cables and foils are some of the lightest and yet most high-performance materials, and these properties contribute to sensible and careful use of resources. The essence of this type of building is a significant level of pre-fabrication, short building times as well as optimised manufacturing and transport costs.
Our structures are optimised using wind assessment and CFD analyses.

STRUCTURES FOR EVENTS AND EXHIBITIONS

Our long experience in international exhibition construction means that we are not only familiar with the exhibition halls but also have our contacts in Detroit, Paris, Frankfurt, Geneva, Beijing, Shanghai, Brussels, Istanbul, Las Vegas, Moscow, Tokyo, Stuttgart and Munich. These contacts play a significant role in accelerating decision-making and in the process of coordination, and ensure planning safety from the design phase on. The Liebherr exhibition stand, built for the third time in 2016, as well as the Mercedes-Benz exhibition stand at the IAA in Frankfurt are examples of highlights in this field.

ARCHITECTURAL [ART]WORK

is a particular challenge; a challenge formTL is happy to take on. This is how the Reichstagsverhüllung (Wrapped Reichstag) with Christo and Jeanne-Claude was created in 1995, the Modern Teahouse by Kengo Kuma in 2007, the Tubaloon by Snøhetta in 2006 and, in conjunction with the Performing Arts Academy, the Lichtwolke (Cloud of Light) pavilion at Raumwelten (Spatial Worlds) in Ludwigsburg.

TOOLS

We have developed our own software for form finding and patterning membrane structures. The software’s data output can be adapted to the project or the customer’s cutting plotter. We use Autodesk Inventor, Rhino/Grasshopper and Revit for parametric engineering design.
AutoCAD, RSTAB/RFEM, Easy, 3ds MAX, OpenFOAM (Computational fluid dynamics) complement our range of tools.

BIM

(Building Information Modeling)
We design using Autocad, Autodesk Inventor and Revit.
Our 3D-models are BIM-compatible and can be used by our planning partners for communication, review and further processing.

In order to achieve our aim of continuous improvement, the “Planer am Bau” working group at formTL optimises internal work processes.

formTL is a partner of Tensinet in Brussels, a network of engineering offices and companies with a main focus on membrane structures. Bernd Stimpfle, our managing director and consulting engineer, is Chairman of Tensinet. He is involved with work on uniform European quality and measurement standards for wide-span membrane and foil structures.

Also this year we received the seal of the Stifterverband for our research activities.

formTL is a member of DIN and actively participates in the development of standards
